Why is dban taking so long

Why did my C: drive disappear? DBAN erases the partition table, which causes all drive letters to disappear. The Microsoft Windows installer will automatically create a partition and filesystem during installation. The Microsoft Windows installation media that you are using only has ATA-5 support, which has a gigabyte limit. The operating system installer must have ATA-6 support to use all of a disk that is larger than gigabytes.

Alternatively, you can install to a gig partition, apply the service pack that provides bit LBA, and then enlarge the filesystem afterwards. Why does my computer start into a black screen after using DBAN? You must reinstall an operating system because DBAN removes it.

Why does the device manager have yellow and red icons after using DBAN? You must reinstall drivers for this hardware after reinstalling the operating system. These drivers were factory installed, but they may not be on the Microsoft Windows installation or rescue media. All major computer manufacturers provide drivers for Microsoft Windows on their web sites. Why is my video resolution low after using DBAN? Why is sound broken after using DBAN?

Read the following link , which provides more information about how DBAN is licensed. We pursue GPL violators. It is recommended for home use only. An errata is a major bug that results in deviation from specification, expected behavior, or auditability.

A defect is a critical bug that would result in a false positive result. DBAN treats these disks as defective and will abort at the end of the first pass. You can check whether you have one of these disks by booting with a DOS floppy and writing to the last sector with a hex editor. Always give the manufacturer and model for your computer when you ask for help. More information is always better. Please read the FAQs below.

CD-ROM drives manufactured before cannot reliably read burned media. Startup Questions How do I get the dmesg? I suspect a driver problem or bad hardware. The laptop computer is not connected to the docking station or to the external floppy drive. Attach a floppy drive. Seems slow for only GB. I think what slows things down is the randomization algorthm.

The shred command uses predetermined patterns and alternates them for each pass, then finalizes with a write of zeros. I was under the same impression on the randomization algorithm slowing things down so I tried the quick erase option on DBAN that just writes 0's, but it still is crawling. In fact, I get the same slow speed that I was getting with the mersenne twist 3 pass algorithm.

Jun 4, 5, 9 A quick note: DBAN 1. Try 1. RU Lifer. Apr 9, 12, 2 Unfortunately, I'm using 1. Anyone have any tips for running DBAN in a situation with SATA where the program loads up and after starting it, it instantly says that it has successfully completed?

RU said:. It can erase and restore performance of degraded SSDs in a minute or two. It uses an ATA standard command secure-erase. I tried it on a regular HDD and erase speed was, no surprize, the same as a regular single pass write zero. It requires changing the HDD password which might put your disk out of warranty. It maybe also more through, but I wouldn't say it's better if you just want to simply wipe your disk and move on with life.

Have you gotten a chance to figure out your bottleneck? Alright, so things today took a turn for the weird. I have another gb drive, same model but manufactured just a few months apart from the previously mentioned one I'll refer to it as for clarity Long story shorter, I hooked up to a different computer and ran DBAN and it finished in 2 hours! At this point I'm thinking that the other computer must be the problem. So now I think it must be the drive that is bad despite tests saying that all is well.

I took and hooked it up to the original computer and it finished in 2 hrs again. So now I'm sure that it is the drive.

So I take the old 40gb drive that took 10 hrs to DBAN on the original computer and it finishes in like 45 minutes on the 2nd computer. I can see no reason or rhyme here as to what is going on! Obviously the first gb is running a little slow, but how do I explain the computer issues?

I can't rule the original computer as having a problem because despite doing all the other drives slow it did fast???? Any ideas? Ken Golden Member. Mar 6, 1, 2 I glanced thru this thread, so forgive me if this has been covered, but: Never mind SMART at this point; have you run CheckDisk on the suspected bad drive? Have you checked the transfer mode from within Device Mgr? Just a thought. Last edited: Mar 28, I ran checkdisk and it found some errors and claimed that it fixed them.

Sep 7, 25, , 8, The errors are the reason. The drive is faulty which slows down the write process of DBAN very substantially. If you intend to re-use the drive or pass it on, I wouldn't bother.

Just take it outside on some concrete, don some safety goggles, then drop it a few times from as high as possible, plus take a hammer to it, then destroy the connectors by levering with a screwdriver. Nobody will ever read it after that. You must log in or register to reply here.
